Felin Isaf Castle

Castell Felin Isaf stands on a quiet rise above the village of Pendoylan in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is a simple earth-and-stone mound, one of the many small motte-and-bailey castles that the Normans introduced to Britain in the 11th and 12th centuries. Unlike larger fortresses, this one never received a surrounding stone wall or bailey; it remained a low, grassy mound surrounded by a ditch. The castle is recognised by Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, and listed as SAM GM370. Most of these modest mounds are found along the historic borderlands known as the Welsh Marches, stretching from Shropshire and Cheshire through Powys to Flintshire. Felin Isaf is part of this distinctive border landscape shaped by centuries of conflict and exchange. Visitors find a low, circular mound about ten metres across, its slopes softened by grass and wildflowers. The ditch that once defended it is still visible as a shallow hollow around the base. From the top there are wide views over the Vale of Glamorgan and the rolling hills beyond. The site is quiet, with no modern buildings nearby, so the medieval earthworks stand clearly against the sky.
