Ybbs Pflegezentrum

The Therapiezentrum Ybbs stands beside the Danube in the Lower Austrian town of Ybbs. It is a hospital run by the Vienna Health Association, made up of a psychiatric hospital and a social-therapeutic centre. The site includes several buildings, some dating back to the 18th century, and two residential groups in separate houses in the town.
The centre is known for its long history of care and its role during difficult periods. In the 1940s it became a military hospital with up to 1,400 beds for wounded soldiers. Earlier, during the Nazi era, more than two thousand patients were taken from here to Hartheim and murdered. The main buildings reflect these changes: one was a cavalry barracks, another a 13th-century convent where Mozart once played the organ.
Visitors find a working hospital set among historic buildings. House 1 combines the psychiatric hospital and social-therapeutic centre, while House 2 houses further social-therapy services. The town also has two small residential units. The site shows how care has evolved over centuries, from barracks to asylum, from wartime use to modern therapy.
