Gateshead International Stadium

Gateshead International Stadium stands on the site of two former chemical works in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The stadium replaced a derelict spoil heap left after the works were demolished in 1932. Built in 1955 as the Gateshead Youth Stadium, it became a major athletics venue after Brendan Foster joined the council in 1974. Foster’s world record in the 3,000 m at the redeveloped track launched the annual Gateshead Games. The stadium has since hosted the British Grand Prix and the European Team Championships three times. The venue has set five world records, including marks by Yelena Isinbayeva and Asafa Powell. It has also been home to Gateshead F.C., the Gateshead Thunder rugby league club, and now Newcastle United Women. Gateshead Harriers, whose life members include Foster and Jonathan Edwards, have trained there since 1956. The stadium has hosted concerts by artists such as Tina Turner and Guns N’ Roses. Visitors find a modern all-seater arena with a main athletics track and a covered Tyne and Wear stand. The site includes an indoor sports hall, football pitches, a gymnasium, and training facilities. The East Stand has a new canopy roof and improved amenities. The surroundings include outdoor pitches and conferencing rooms.
