Stiftskirche Reichersberg

The Stifts- und Pfarrkirche Reichersberg stands in the market town of Reichersberg in Upper Austria. It belongs to the Augustinian Canons Regular and serves as both a parish church and part of the monastery complex. The building has been under official protection since the 12th century. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and fine craftsmanship. A Romanesque church was first consecrated in 1126, then rebuilt after a fire by Christoph Weiß between 1629 and 1644. A later tower collapse in 1774 led to a new west tower by Blasius Aichinger, completed in 1777. The interior shows the work of notable artists such as Christian Wink, Josef Bergler and Thomas Schwanthaler. Inside, the single-aisled nave has four deep north-side chapels and a half-round apse. The west gallery carries a fine organ by Johann Michael Herberger from 1779. The ceiling frescos by Christian Wink depict scenes including the founding of the order by Augustine and the appearance of the Archangel Michael. Side altars, confessionals and stalls in the late-baroque style line the space, while the south side opens directly to the monastery cloister.
