Dekanatspfarrkirche hll. Petrus und Paulus, Breitenwang

The Pfarrkirche Breitenwang stands in the village of Breitenwang in the Austrian Alps. It is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, part of the Diocese of Innsbruck. The church and its adjoining mortuary church with a central tower are protected as historic monuments. The church is worth visiting for its rich Baroque architecture and fine furnishings. The present building dates mainly from the late 17th century, when the nave and choir were rebuilt by Paul Torwertel between 1685 and 1691. The tower, rebuilt after a collapse in 1640, was completed in 1653 by the master builder Haselmayr. Inside, the high altar of 1685 and the ceiling fresco of the Keys to Peter by Johann Jakob Zeiller from 1755 draw the eye. Visitors find a walled churchyard with side chapels and niches surrounding the building. The church itself has a steep-roofed nave on the right and a lower-roofed choir, with a tall Baroque tower topped by a pointed spire at the centre. On the left is the mortuary church with its curved gable. Inside, the three-bay nave is divided by double pilasters and covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. The two-bay choir ends in a three-sided apse. The restored organ of 2000, with its five-part Rococo case adorned with angels and putti, is a highlight of the interior.
