Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre stands in Blackpool, Lancashire, on the north-west coast of England. Built in 1894, it is a Grade II* listed building designed by Frank Matcham, a leading Victorian theatre architect. The theatre was commissioned by local impresario Thomas Sergenson, who had used the site for circus performances before deciding to create a grand playhouse. Matcham’s design introduced a cantilevered structure, removing obstructive pillars and giving every seat a clear view of the stage. The building cost £20,000 and was completed in just seven months. It quickly became known as the ‘prettiest theatre in the land’ and remains a landmark of its era. The theatre’s survival is a story of community effort. After falling into decline in the 1960s, it faced demolition in 1972 but was saved by its listing and a campaign led by Jeffrey Finestone and the Victorian Society. A group of theatre lovers formed the Friends of the Grand, who negotiated the return of the building and oversaw its restoration. In 1981 it reopened with a performance of *The Merchant of Venice* starring Timothy West and Prunella Scales. In 2006 it was named the UK’s National Theatre of Variety, a title awarded by Equity in recognition of its long tradition of variety entertainment. Inside, the auditorium retains its original ornate plasterwork and gilded detailing. The stage is framed by a proscenium arch, and the cantilevered balconies curve gracefully above the stalls. The theatre hosts a varied programme of plays, musicals and variety shows throughout the year. The Friends of the Grand continue to support improvements, funding new seating, carpets and technical equipment. The building’s interior reflects both its Victorian origins and the care taken to preserve it for future generations.
