Gaststaette Fraunhofer

The Fraunhofer inn stands on Fraunhoferstraße in Munich’s Isarvorstadt district. It occupies the whole ground floor of the corner house at number 9, its four large street windows clearly marking the entrance. The building itself dates from 1830, when it was one of the first in the street, though the site has housed a tavern since 1774. In 1890–91 the upper floors were raised and the façade remodelled in Neurenaissance style. The inn’s interior was completely refitted in 1896 and has survived almost unchanged since then. The inn’s two main rooms are arranged at right angles, the front one running along the street frontage. A small side room is reached through a basket arch from the rear part of the main room. The fixed fittings of 1896 include a richly stuccoed arch supported by a polished marble column. Oak panelling lines the walls to about two-thirds height, divided into half-metre panels of different woods. The windows are framed by carved pilasters and inlaid with playing-card symbols, wine tendrils and hop cones. Beside the entrance is the wooden porch and the bar counter, both built-in. A serving hatch in matching woodwork opens into the kitchen. Behind the inn is the Fraunhofer theatre, founded in 1974 by Werner Winkler and the landlord Josef ‘Beppi’ Bachmaier. Next door, in the old skittle alley, the Werkstattkino shows films that nowhere else will screen.
