St John the Baptist church, Kirk Hammerton

St John the Baptist Church stands in the quiet North Yorkshire village of Kirk Hammerton. Built on a small mound where three lanes meet, the church mixes centuries of stonework. Its oldest parts date from the ninth century, when Anglo-Saxon masons used blocks of millstone grit taken from the ruins of Roman York. The tower, added around 950, remains one of the few complete Anglo-Saxon church towers in England. Later builders extended the nave in Norman times and again in the 19th century, leaving a patchwork of styles inside. The churchyard slopes gently around the building, shaded by mature trees and marked by two gateways. The church is worth the journey for its rare survival of early English architecture. The ninth-century chancel and nave now form the south aisle, while the mid-tenth-century tower rises above the nave roof. Victorian restorers under H. Fowler of Durham added a Pre-Raphaelite scheme of painted decoration, and Charles Kempe designed stained glass windows. The font dates from the reign of Charles II, and the west door still shows its original Saxon hinges. In the churchyard lie soldiers who fell at the nearby Battle of Marston Moor, their graves recorded on 166 headstones. Inside, the nave and aisles show different centuries side by side. The south aisle walls are whitewashed, the north aisle left bare, and the arcades vary in height and style. The Lady Chapel preserves its original Anglo-Saxon form, while the south chapel has both early English lancets and a large Norman window. The square tower contains two bells under a shallow pyramid roof, and the Saxon west door leads back into the light. Outside, the brick boundary and lychgate frame views across the village green.
