Burgstall Geyersberg
The Geyersberg castle site stands on a hilltop east of the summit of Geyersberg, a 770-metre peak near the village of Geyersberg in Freyung, Lower Bavaria. It was a medieval hilltop fortress, now reduced to foundations and listed as a Bavarian archaeological monument. The site overlooks the surrounding countryside from its elevated position. The castle once belonged to the bishops of Passau, who used it as an administrative seat in the Middle Ages. Little remains above ground, but the earthworks and buried walls still mark the outline of the former stronghold. Archaeologists recognise the site by its official monument number D-2-7247-0152. Visitors reach the spot by following paths up the wooded slopes of Geyersberg. At the top, grass and bracken cover the low earth ramparts that once supported wooden palisades. From the highest point there are wide views across the Bavarian Forest and towards the border with the Czech Republic.
