Festung Pass Strub
The Festung Pass Strub is a ruined fortress standing at the Pass Strub, a mountain pass between Lofer and Waidring. It once guarded the road linking Salzburg with Tirol. The site sits on the historic border between Salzburg and Tirol. The fortress has a long military history. First built in 1282, it was expanded in the 17th century by Archbishop Paris Lodron to protect against Swedish forces. In 1805 local militia and imperial troops held the fortress against the French. Four years later Bavarian forces captured it during Andreas Hofer’s Tyrolean uprising, and the French ordered its destruction. Today only ruins remain. Visitors see crumbling walls and earthworks marking the site of past battles. The surrounding mountains and the pass road give a sense of the fortress’s strategic position. The landscape is quiet now, with few signs of the fierce fighting once fought here.
