Maria Schnee am Hiltschnerberg

Maria Schnee am Hiltschnerberg is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in the village of Hiltschen, part of Leopoldschlag in Upper Austria’s Mühlviertel region. It stands on a hill east of the B310 road between Freistadt and Wullowitz, a quiet spot chosen for its views. The site was first marked in 1978 by a small chapel built with donations from local believers and expellees from Bohemia. By 1984 the present church was completed, designed to echo the style of the historic Maria Schnee church across the border in the Czech Republic. On 5 August 1984 the building was consecrated by Abbot Florian Pröll of Schlägl Abbey. The church is recognised each year on 15 August when a large pilgrimage draws worshippers to the hilltop. The interior features an altar painting by the artist Anna Loistl, who created the work to link the new church with its Bohemian namesake. From the church steps visitors can see the distant spires of Maria Schnee in the Czech Republic, reinforcing the spiritual connection between the two sites. The building also serves as a memorial to those who once travelled from southern Bohemia to pray at the original shrine. Inside, the church offers a single nave with clear lines and a modest high altar. The walls are whitewashed, allowing the altar painting to stand out. Outside, a gravel path leads up the gentle slope to the entrance, flanked by low stone walls. The surrounding farmland stretches away in wide fields, giving the place a calm, open atmosphere. On clear days the view extends far across the border hills, linking the Austrian hilltop with its Bohemian counterpart.
