Lucy Cavendish College

Lucy Cavendish College stands on the north-west edge of central Cambridge, where Madingley Road meets Lady Margaret Road. Its grounds sit beside Westminster College and St John’s College, the latter providing part of the land when the college moved here in 1970. The site centres on three converted 19th-century villas and a modern Passivhaus building that meets the strictest environmental standards. In 1991 the college bought Balliol Croft, once home to economist Alfred Marshall and his wife, and renamed it Marshall House. Warburton Hall and the library were added in the 1990s, completing the main group of buildings. The college began in 1965 as a women’s college founded by female academics who saw too few opportunities for women at Cambridge. It was named after Lucy Cavendish, a 19th-century campaigner for women’s education. In 2021 it became mixed, admitting both women and men to broaden access for under-represented students. Over 93% of UK undergraduates now come from state schools, and students represent more than 85 countries. The college has produced notable figures such as UN Under-Secretary-General Noeleen Heyzer and MP Rosena Allin-Khan. Visitors find a quiet campus arranged around the villas and the Passivhaus block, with Marshall House serving as the President’s Lodge. Warburton Hall provides a large meeting space, and the library holds the college’s growing collections. The eco-friendly building supplies all its own electricity from renewables and has earned a UN Platinum Award for sustainable practice. Beyond the academic core, the college offers 235 student rooms on site and 507 more nearby. The atmosphere remains studious yet welcoming, shaped by its history of widening access to higher education.
