Cultural heritage D-1-7634-0009 in Markt Indersdorf

The Burgstall Frauenhofen is an early medieval hilltop fortification near Frauenhofen, a village in Markt Indersdorf. It stands on the Schlossberg at 485 metres above sea level, 300 metres east of the village centre. The site is listed as a protected archaeological monument covering Bronze Age settlement traces, medieval castle ruins and prehistoric graves. Its roughly rectangular shape measures 180 metres from east to west and 135 metres from north to south. The hilltop is mostly covered by woodland, leaving only the central area as open meadow. Archaeologists recognise the remains as a high medieval castle site that later fell into disuse. The surrounding forest preserves the earthworks and ramparts that once defended the stronghold. Prehistoric burials found here date from before and during the early medieval period. Visitors reach the site along woodland paths that climb the Schlossberg. The open meadow at the top offers wide views across the Dachau countryside. Interpretive signs explain the Bronze Age and medieval layers still visible in the terrain. The quiet woodland setting contrasts with the long history preserved beneath the grass and trees.
