Bad am Spreewaldplatz

The Spreewaldbad is a public indoor swimming pool in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. It sits beside the Wiener Straße, next to the Spreewaldplatz, with its outdoor areas stretching into the nearby Görlitzer Park. Built in the late 1980s, it was designed by Christoph Langhof’s architectural practice after five years of construction. The pool stands out for its mix of sport and leisure features. A 25-metre lane pool offers six swimming lanes, while a separate diving area has one-metre and three-metre boards. There is also a wave pool, a children’s pool, a flume and a 16.7-metre non-swimmer pool. The venue includes two dry saunas with plunge pools and rest rooms, and it meets Berlin’s accessibility standards. For many years it was one of only two city baths where Muslim women could wear a burkini during designated hours. Inside the entrance hangs a plaque honouring 295 people who returned from Shanghai exile through Görlitzer Bahnhof in 1947. The building once formed part of a climate-protection agreement aimed at cutting carbon emissions by a quarter by 2010. Today it consumes around four gigawatt-hours of energy each year.
