Schloss Saalfeld/Saale

Schloss Saalfeld is a Baroque palace built on the site of a former Benedictine monastery in the Saale valley. Construction began in 1677 under Duke Albrecht and continued until 1726 under several architects. The palace served as the residence of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld until 1735. The palace reflects the artistic achievements of local and Italian craftsmen, seen in the staircase and chapel. The North Wing was completed in 1704, and the South Wing finished by 1720, with the interior completed in 1626. The palace became an administrative centre in 1735, later housing municipal offices between 1919 and 1922. A fire in 1953 damaged the chapel roof, restored in 1966. Today the palace houses the district administration of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt. The chapel hosts musical events, while the palace gardens remain open to the public. The surviving Baroque structures and restored interiors offer glimpses of its past grandeur.
