Cultural heritage D-2-7437-0001 in Bruckberg

The Burgstall Altes Schloss is an early medieval hilltop fortification near Almosenbachhorn, a village in Bruckberg, Lower Bavaria. It stands on the western edge of the Zieglerfeld, a plateau that drops forty metres to the Möslingbach stream. The oval site measures two hundred metres from northwest to southeast and one hundred and forty metres from northeast to southwest. A shallow ditch once defended the approach from the rising ground behind, while a low rampart behind the ditch has been levelled by farming. Below the fortification, along the Möslingbach, an ancient road runs as a separate archaeological site. The ditch and rampart continue along the steep slope as a faint terrace, visible only in places five to ten metres below the edge. The main ditch is about one and a half metres deep and up to twenty metres wide, with a gentler outer trench marking the hillside. These earthworks show how the builders shaped the land to protect the settlement. Visitors walk across farmland to reach the quiet plateau. The remains are subtle—low banks and shallow hollows that blend into the fields. From the edge, the view drops over the wooded valley to the rolling hills of Lower Bavaria. The site is little known, so it offers a peaceful moment with early medieval history without crowds.
