Mains Castle

Mains Castle stands on a gentle rise near East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire. The fifteenth-century tower house was built by the Lindsay family to replace an earlier Comyn stronghold. Its rectangular form rises four storeys above a vaulted basement. The castle is listed at the highest national category for historic buildings. The site may once have held Kilbride Castle, though records are uncertain. Stone walls up to two metres thick still carry arrow-slit windows and corbelled turrets. The castle’s long history is visible in every masonry course. The Lindsays held the lands for centuries before the property passed to other owners. It survived sieges and changes of use without losing its core structure. Archaeologists have traced medieval garderobes and a great hall within the tower. The building’s Category A status reflects its national importance. Visitors walk through vaulted ground-floor chambers lit by narrow slits. A turnpike stair leads to upper floors where mural passages connect rooms. The roof walk offers views across the rolling Lanarkshire countryside. The castle sits within a small wooded park that provides quiet paths for short walks. A single-storey service wing, added in the 17th century, still stands attached to the main block. The setting remains peaceful despite its proximity to modern East Kilbride.
