Munich preserves traces of its medieval past in scattered Burgställe, sites where castles once stood. The city’s built-up area contains the remains or records of over twenty such places. Where the exact spot is uncertain, historians rely on old maps and place names to guess their former positions. Each site tells part of Munich’s story before the city expanded beyond its medieval walls. Visitors can walk past several of these spots without realising their history. The Burg am Kosttor once guarded the eastern gate of the old town. Nearby, the Burgstall an der Lände probably controlled river traffic along the Isar. Schloss Blutenburg, though still standing, began as a fortified manor in the 15th century. The Alte Hof, the ducal palace of the Wittelsbachs, shows how castles evolved into palaces. Together these fragments offer a quiet reminder of Munich’s early defences and rulers.
