Basilica of St. Lawrence, Enns

The Basilica of St Lawrence stands in the Lorch district of Enns, a town in Upper Austria. It began as a Roman noble house from the 2nd century and later became an early Christian church. Archaeologists uncovered these remains between 1960 and 1966. The present Gothic building dates from after 1300, following several earlier renovations. In the 1960s the church was restored and adapted to the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. It now serves as a minor basilica and a listed building within the Diocese of Linz. The site is worth visiting for its layered history reaching back almost two thousand years. The Roman foundations sit beneath the Gothic walls, showing how the building evolved over centuries. The Diocese of Linz recognises its importance by including it in the Enns-Lorch deanery. The archaeological work revealed not only the noble house but also traces of early Christian worship. This makes the basilica a rare example of continuous religious use from antiquity to the present. Inside, visitors find a Gothic church with clear modern influences. The nave and aisles follow the Gothic style while the furnishings reflect the liturgical changes of the 1960s. The exposed Roman walls in the crypt provide a tangible link to the past. Outside, the basilica rises above the quiet streets of Lorch, its stonework marking the spot where Enns began. The surrounding area preserves traces of the Roman settlement that once stood here.
