Oldenburger Wall

The Oldenburger Wall is a Slavic ring fortification near Horst in the Herzogtum Lauenburg district. It sits on a natural mound surrounded by low-lying marshes between Neu-Horst and Lehmrade. The circular earthworks have an outer diameter of 60 metres and rise up to 7 metres on the outside and 3 metres on the inside. Excavations in 1911 and 1949 uncovered animal bones and pottery shards dating from the 8th to the early 9th century. Later geomagnetic surveys showed no buildings inside the ramparts. Outside the fort lay an open Slavic settlement beside the Oldenburger See. The site is protected as a monument under German heritage law. Visitors find a grassy mound ringed by tall earth banks. The inner hollow is open and level, with no standing structures. The surrounding marshes stretch away to the nearby lake, creating a quiet, rural setting. The site offers a clear view of the flat countryside and the water beyond.
