Pfarrkirche St. Georgen an der Mattig

The parish church of Burgkirchen stands in St Georgen on the Mattig in Upper Austria. Its dedication is to Saint Maximilian. The church and its walled cemetery are protected as a monument. The present building began as a Romanesque church mentioned in 1130. In 1742 the Gothic structure was transformed into a Baroque interior. Johann Michael Vierthaler covered the vaults with delicate stucco ribbons and grids. The high altar of 1645 by Martin Zürn holds a later painting of the martyrdom of Saint Maximilian. A late-Gothic font and a bell cast in 1651 by Simon Lenzer of Braunau remain from earlier periods. Inside, the single nave has five bays and a two-bay choir with a three-sided end. The sacristy vault and the south chapel vault both show star ribs. The west tower, rebuilt after a fire in 1653, rises as an octagon topped by a bulbous dome. Outside, the cemetery wall is capped with wedge-shaped stones.
