Castell Cwmere

Castell Cwmere is an Iron Age hillfort near Llanfihangel Ystrad in Ceredigion, Wales. It sits on a rise that once gave defenders a clear view of the surrounding countryside. The site is one of about 300 hillforts on Cadw’s list of ancient monuments in Wales. Archaeologists estimate that around 570 such forts once existed across the country. These forts were built mainly before the Roman invasion to protect homes and armies. The fort’s purpose was military shelter and control of the land. Many were reused or strengthened by the Romans, such as Dinorben in north Wales. The Iron Age saw a golden age of hillfort building in Britain between 200 BC and AD 43. Castell Cwmere belongs to this period of Celtic organisation and defence. Visitors find grassy banks and ditches marking the fort’s outline on the hilltop. The site offers quiet views over the valley below. There are no modern buildings, just the remains of an ancient refuge. The air is still, broken only by birdsong and the wind. It is a place where the past feels close and undisturbed.
