Karlsberg Castle

Schloss Karlsberg was a vast Baroque and Classical palace built between 1778 and 1788 for Charles II August, Duke of Zweibrücken. Designed by Johann Christian von Mannlich, it became Europe’s largest country palace, stretching 1,250 metres along the hillside. The complex included not only the mansion but also barracks, farms, kennels and stables, forming a small village. Only the Karlsberg grange survives today. The main building had a three-winged layout around a courtyard of honour, with a grand staircase rising 42 metres. The palace stood as a demonstration of the duke’s newfound wealth after inheriting multiple Wittelsbach titles. The interior reflected the finest French craftsmanship of the period. Furniture was carved and gilded by Georges Jacob, while sculptures came from François-Joseph Duret and Martin-Claude Monot. Silverware was supplied by Jean-Jacques Kirstein, and drapery woven in Lyon. The show bedroom featured a bed designed ‘à la Romaine’, later copied for French kings. The gardens were divided into a Baroque park near the house, and English-style landscapes called Karlslust and Hirschwürzloch. Court gardeners including Johann Ludwig Petri worked on the grounds, though Mannlich and Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell also contributed. Visitors today walk among the ruins and see the surviving Karlsberg grange at the valley entrance. The hilltop site offers wide views over the surrounding countryside. The plain classical façades, with their continuous cornices and gabled roofs, still impress by scale rather than ornament. The staircase’s former grandeur can be imagined where only fragments remain. The contrast between the ruined palace and the intact farm building shows how the complex once functioned. The peaceful Buchenberg setting contrasts with the site’s dramatic past.
