Margens
Margens is a small settlement in the municipality of Stedesdorf, part of the Esens collective municipality in Lower Saxony. It sits on a large man-made mound known as a Warft, likely raised before coastal dikes were built in the 12th century. The name first appears in records from 1438 as toe Merghense or by Marghenze, linked to an old Frisian personal name. Archaeologists have found stones in the Gulfhof barn that resemble those used in medieval monasteries. A 1589 map by David Fabricius marks the site with a monastery symbol, suggesting an earlier religious presence. Historians debate whether Margens once housed an independent monastery. After the Reformation the land became part of the monastery estate of Marienkamp and later passed to the rulers of Harlingerland. The estate remains in private hands today. The Warft itself offers a raised vantage point above the surrounding flatlands. Visitors can still see the Gulfhof barn where the unusual stones were discovered. A quiet country lane leads to the farm, passing fields and drainage ditches typical of the region. The mound’s height provides views across the marshy landscape towards the North Sea coast. Nearby, the remains of medieval dikes hint at the ongoing battle against the tides. The site invites a slow walk around its edges, where earthworks and old boundaries recall centuries of farming and faith.
