Burg Alzenach
Burg Alzenach once stood on flat land northeast of Gündlingen, a village now part of Breisach am Rhein. Built in the 12th century, it belonged to officials serving the Zähringen dukes before passing to the Knights of St John in 1283. By 1347 the castle had been demolished and its estate given to Sulzburg convent.
The ruins were levelled long ago and today only the earthworks remain. Aerial photographs still show the outline of the old walls beneath farmland. No stone buildings survive above ground, so the site is best understood from the air.
Visitors walk across open fields where the castle once stood. There are no walls or towers to explore, just a gentle rise in the ground marking the former stronghold. The surrounding countryside offers wide views over the Rhine plain.
