Lofer Mountains

The Loferer Steinberge form a rugged limestone range in the Northern Limestone Alps, straddling the border between Tyrol and Salzburg. The mountains rise sharply above green valleys where small villages like Lofer and St Ulrich am Pillersee sit beside clear mountain lakes. A high saddle called the Römersattel separates them from the Leogang Mountains to the south-east. The range shares borders with the Chiemgau Alps, Berchtesgaden Alps, Kitzbühel Alps and Kaisergebirge, creating a natural crossroads of alpine landscapes. Among the peaks, Großes Ochsenhorn stands highest at 2,511 metres, followed by Mitterhorn at 2,506 metres and Großes Reifhorn at 2,480 metres. Ulrichshorn reaches 2,032 metres, while Breithorn, Großes Rothorn and others crowd the skyline. These summits draw hikers who follow marked routes through steep rock faces and alpine meadows. The contrast between jagged ridges and gentle high pastures makes the range visually striking. Walkers find waymarked paths that climb past waterfalls and through forests to high viewpoints. The Schmidt Zabierow Hut offers rest and shelter on one popular route. From the summits, views stretch across the Northern Limestone Alps and deep into the surrounding valleys. The villages below provide simple inns and guesthouses where visitors can recover after a day on the mountains.
