Kalter Gang

The Kalter Gang is a river in the Industrieviertel region of Lower Austria, south of Vienna. It flows as a tributary into the Schwechat. The river’s name means ‘cold stream’, describing its unusually steady, cool water. Groundwater springs near Ebreichsdorf feed the Kalter Gang, giving it a higher magnesium sulphate content than nearby waters. For centuries the middle and upper stretches have sometimes been confused with the Piesting. Measurements now confirm the Kalter Gang as a separate watercourse. Its clearer identity comes from the constant temperature provided by the springs. The river’s rehabilitation near Pellendorf shows how local efforts restore habitats. A one-kilometre stretch was re-shaped in early 2019 to improve flow and bank conditions. Conservation work focused on stabilising the riverbed and widening the channel. Native plants were planted along the banks to shade the water and support wildlife. The project aimed to raise water quality and reduce erosion in the area. Visitors can now walk beside a more natural section of the Kalter Gang. A riverside path follows the rehabilitated stretch, giving views of the flowing water and surrounding fields. The even temperature of the stream attracts dragonflies and other insects in summer. Walkers notice the faint mineral scent from the magnesium sulphate in the water. The path links to local farm tracks, offering quiet routes through the countryside. On hot days the cool air above the river provides relief. The scene shows how small rivers can be both ecological assets and peaceful places to explore.
