Burgruine Neu- bzw. Ober-Sturmberg

The Burg Ober-Sturmberg stands as the remains of a once-mighty hilltop fortress in Naas, a village in the Weiz district of Styria. Its origins reach back to the mid-12th century, making it one of the oldest strongholds in the region. The site is protected by law as a listed monument, preserving what little survives of the medieval structure. Over the centuries the castle passed through many noble hands, from Elisabeth Hafner in 1393 to the Khevenhüller-Metsch family in the 18th century. By 1780 it had already fallen into ruin, joining its neighbour Alt-Sturmberg in picturesque decay. What remains today is mainly the stone foundations of a rectangular great hall built in the 12th century. A strong ring wall was added later to enclose the inner ward. By the 16th century several round towers stood along this wall, reinforcing the castle’s defences. A covered staircase once led down the mountainside, and old tales speak of a secret passage linking Ober-Sturmberg with its counterpart below. After more than two centuries of neglect, only these fragments survive to tell the story. Visitors walk among grassy mounds and low stone outlines that mark the former layout. The summit offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and distant hills. The quiet of the site contrasts with the bustle of nearby Naas, making it a place for reflection on medieval life. The ruins themselves are modest, yet they carry the weight of eight hundred years of history.
