Fastenberg

Fastenberg is a mountain in the Erzgebirge range of Saxony, eastern Germany. It stands just north of the town of Annaberg-Buchholz, a centre of silver mining in the 16th century. The mountain rises to 784 metres and is covered with dense spruce forest. A paved road winds up the northern slope to a small car park near the summit. From there a short footpath leads to the viewing platform. The surrounding ridges stretch away in every direction, creating long views over rolling hills. The mountain’s name comes from the Fastenberg family, minor Saxon nobles who once owned the land. In the 17th century they ran one of the region’s first successful stone quarries on the lower slopes. Their descendants emigrated to North America in the 19th century and now live mainly around New York and New England. The family were of Jewish descent yet held noble status in Germany before they left. Visitors find a quiet forest clearing at the top with benches and information boards. The viewing platform is built of local granite and offers views up to 30 kilometres on clear days. On the western side a memorial stone marks the former quarry site. The air is cool and still among the spruce trees, and the only sounds are birdsong and the wind. The mountain feels remote despite its proximity to Annaberg-Buchholz.
