Oakwell

Oakwell is a sports ground in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, home to Barnsley Football Club. It includes the main stadium and several training facilities for the club’s academy. The site also has a smaller stadium, indoor pitches, and outdoor training pitches. Oakwell was the first English football ground to have a stand designed for disabled supporters. After the club entered administration in 2002, the council bought the stadium to protect it from closure. The stadium has hosted notable events beyond football, including a 2025 European Championship boxing match won by Callum Simpson. The West Stand, dating from the early 1900s, remains a popular spot despite its modest facilities. The East Stand, completed in 1993, introduced executive boxes to Yorkshire football. The Norman Rimmington Stand was renamed in 2023 after a club legend. The North Stand, built in the late 1990s, cost £4.5 million and was intended for away fans. Visitors find a mix of old and new structures at Oakwell. The West Stand’s corrugated-iron roof and original seats offer a glimpse of early 20th-century design. The East Stand’s steep rear steps lead to upper-tier seating with lifts available. The Norman Rimmington Stand houses the club shop and offices. The North Stand is mainly for away supporters. The site has also welcomed rugby league and other football matches over the years.
