Gate of Dawn

The Gate of Dawn stands in the old town of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is one of the city’s nine medieval gates, built between 1503 and 1514 as part of the defensive wall. The gate’s outer walls still show the original firing openings. Inside, a chapel houses a revered icon of the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn. The image has been a symbol of the city for centuries and attracts pilgrims from across the region. The gate also bears traces of its past, including faded paintings of saints rediscovered in 1976. Nearby, the Discalced Carmelite monastery and Church of St. Theresa were added in the 17th century. The gate is a major site of Catholic pilgrimage in Lithuania. The icon is believed to have miraculous powers and has been a focus of devotion since the 17th century. Thousands of votive offerings cover the chapel walls, and masses are held in Lithuanian and Polish. The gate survived the demolition of the city walls in the early 19th century because of its religious significance. It has also played a role in key historical events, including the defence of Vilnius during the Great Northern War. Two popes, John Paul II and Francis, have prayed at the chapel, underscoring its importance. Visitors find a small but richly decorated chapel inside the gate. The walls are covered with oak panelling added in the 1930s, and a stucco altar from the late 18th century remains intact. The chapel’s modest size contrasts with the devotion it inspires. Outside, the gate opens onto a quiet street in the old town, where the surrounding buildings reflect centuries of history. The Feast of the Protection of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn draws large crowds every November. The site remains a place of quiet reflection and spiritual significance.
