Wildenstein Castle
Burg Wildenstein stands on a rocky spur high above the Danube’s narrow valley in the Swabian Alb. Built between 1200 and 1300, the medieval fortress once guarded the river’s break-through. Today it serves as a youth hostel run by the German Youth Hostel Association. The castle’s thick walls and towers still rise over the surrounding forest and farmland. From the terrace visitors look down on the young Danube winding far below. The site belongs to the Regierungsbezirk Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg. Its position made it a key lookout point for centuries.
The castle is worth the journey for anyone interested in medieval military architecture. The main building contains a remarkable Sigenot wall painting from the 15th century. This large fresco depicts the hero Sigenot in dramatic scenes. Guests can explore the vaulted cellars and the great hall where the painting hangs. The castle also appears in the Zimmern Chronicle, a 16th-century manuscript. Historians recognise it as one of the best-preserved spur castles in the region.
Inside the hostel, dormitory rooms occupy the old knights’ quarters. The refectory keeps the vaulted ceiling and stone fireplace of the original castle hall. Outside, a short path leads to the battlements for wide views across the Alb plateau. The surrounding woodland offers quiet walks to the nearby village of Leibertingen. On clear days the panorama stretches to the Danube’s distant bends. The place still feels like a fortress, yet welcomes travellers as guests.
