Götzenstein

The Götzenstein is a wooded hill in the Odenwald range, rising to 521.9 metres above sea level. It lies near Löhrbach, a village that belongs to Birkenau in southern Hesse’s Bergstraße district. About 1.6 kilometres northwest of Abtsteinach, the summit is marked by a cluster of natural granodiorite boulders shaped by spheroidal weathering. These rocks form a protected natural monument on the hilltop. Local folklore suggests the flattened summit once held a Celtic or Germanic cult site, though no archaeological finds confirm this. A signboard claims the Frankish leader Dietbert continued to honour the old gods here after Clovis I converted to Christianity around the year 500. The name Götzenstein only appears in records from the 19th century, long after the supposed events. Visitors reach the summit along forest paths and find the scattered granite blocks arranged in rough circles. The view opens across the Odenwald’s rolling tree cover towards the Rhine valley in the distance. On clear days the silhouette of the Melibokus, the region’s highest peak, can be seen to the west. The quiet clearing offers a place to pause and imagine the ancient rites once claimed to have taken place among the stones.
