Rhondda
Rhondda is a valley in South Wales shaped by glaciers into two deep, steep-sided valleys, Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach. The landscape was carved by slow-moving ice during the last ice age, leaving narrow slopes that guided where people settled. Early visitors left traces such as a Mesolithic stone tool found at Craig y Llyn in 1963. Neolithic hut remains were excavated at Cefn Glas in 1973, showing the first structures built by people. Bronze Age cairns and a ring cairn known as Rhondda Stonehenge mark high points across the ridges. A hoard of 24 Bronze Age weapons and tools, including an iron sword, was discovered at Llyn Fawr reservoir in 1912. The valleys became known for coal mining, which grew rapidly from the mid-19th century. The area was officially recognised as Ystradyfodwg Local Government District in 1877 before being renamed Rhondda Urban District in 1897. The coal industry peaked between 1840 and 1925, shaping the communities and economy. Nonconformist movements, especially Baptist chapels, influenced local values in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Male voice choirs and strong traditions in sport and politics also grew from this period. Visitors walk along the narrow valley floors and climb the steep slopes to see the remains of earlier times. Hillforts such as Maendy Camp lie between Ton Pentre and Cwmparc, with earthworks still visible. Ruined drystone roundhouses at Hen Dre’r Mynydd suggest a farming community from the Roman period. The Iron Age settlement above Blaenllechau in Ferndale shows earthworks linked to Roman military presence. High on the ridges, Bronze Age cairns and the Rhondda Stonehenge offer views over the valleys. The landscape today carries the marks of both ancient settlement and later industry.
