Vorburg
Schloss Greifenstein stands on a rocky outcrop above the village of Heiligenstadt in the rugged hills of Franconian Switzerland. The castle overlooks the surrounding valleys and the winding roads of the Burgenstraße, a modern tourist route linking many historic castles. First recorded in 1172, it was a medieval fortress later ruined during the Peasants’ War of the 16th century. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it became the residence of the Schenk von Stauffenberg family, who still own it today. The castle’s Baroque transformation began in 1691 under Marquard Sebastian von Schenk von Stauffenberg, Prince-Bishop of Bamberg. The Bavarian architect Leonhard Dientzenhofer led the work, giving the castle its grand palace-like appearance. Above the gate hangs a Latin inscription from Luke 6:19, reminding visitors of its spiritual and historical significance. The castle’s collection of arms and armour is widely recognised as one of the finest in the region. Visitors reach the castle along a steep path that rises from Heiligenstadt. Inside, the restored interiors reflect both medieval origins and Baroque grandeur. The armouries display suits of armour and weapons from different centuries. The views from the battlements stretch across the rolling Franconian landscape, making the climb worthwhile. The castle remains a private residence, yet parts are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the life of a noble family.
