Turm am Schweren Berg

The tower at Schwerer Berg stands on the edge of the Nochten brown-coal mine south of Weißwasser in Saxony. Built in 2008 by the energy company Vattenfall, it is a reinforced-concrete structure with four viewing platforms reached by 166 steps. The mine below shows both active pits and reclaimed land, while power stations at Boxberg and Schwarze Pumpe rise on the horizon. The view from the top takes in the patchwork of restored landscapes and working quarries. Weißwasser and its surroundings stretch towards the horizon, framed by the mine’s edges. The tower links directly to the Weißwasser Communication and Conservation Centre, where visitors learn about the region’s transformation. Paths lead from the base through reclaimed woodland to the foot of the tower. Inside, the climb passes each viewing level, offering ever-wider panoramas. The centre’s displays explain how mining land is reshaped into new habitats. Visitors leave with a clear picture of industry and nature side by side.
