Heron Monument, Monigaff Old Parish Church Burial Ground

The Heron Monument stands in the burial ground of Monigaff Old Parish Church, near the village of Minnigaff in Dumfries and Galloway. It is a grand classical tomb built in 1761 from red sandstone. Two pairs of Corinthian columns support an ornate frieze and a pediment topped with an urn. The monument honours the Heron family and features a carved memorial plaque set into the rear wall. A heraldic panel is framed by a decorative moulding above the plaque. A low stone wall with a balustrade encloses the site, and an iron gate hangs from rustic posts on the east side. Visitors find a sombre yet stately structure surrounded by weathered gravestones. Ivy and moss have taken hold on the sandstone, threatening the stability of two decorative elements. The monument is listed as at risk, though repairs have been proposed to prevent further decay.
