St Felicitas and St Piala's Church, Phillack
St Felicitas and St Piala’s Church stands in Phillack, a village now part of Hayle in west Cornwall. The building began in the 12th century and its sturdy tower was added in the 15th century. Between 1856 and 1857 the church was rebuilt by the Cornish architect William White. On 12 May 1857 it was re-consecrated and reopened for worship. The church is one of only a few Grade II* listed parish churches in the county. The church belongs to a group of five linked parishes across Hayle and the surrounding villages. These include St Erth’s Church, St Gwinear’s Church, St Elwyn’s Church in Hayle and St Gothian’s Church at Gwithian. Each building shares the same parish status and pastoral care. William White’s rebuilding gave the church its present form while keeping earlier elements. Inside, visitors find the 1905 organ built by Heard and Son of Truro. The organ case and pipes remain in place, offering a quiet place for music and reflection. The church’s interior is simple and light, with clear lines from White’s restoration. Outside, the churchyard holds weathered headstones that recall the lives of Phillack’s past residents.
