Bury Art Museum

Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre stands in the town of Bury, Greater Manchester. The museum occupies a building designed by Woodhouse and Willoughby and opened in 1901. It was restored and reopened in 2005 after a major refurbishment. The museum houses a public library alongside its art and archives. Artefacts, documents and artworks tell the story of the town in a single space. The museum’s Wrigley Collection began in 1897 with a gift of more than 200 oil paintings, watercolours, prints and ceramics. Among the artists represented are J. M. W. Turner, John Constable and Edwin Landseer. Later donations came from figures such as local Member of Parliament James Kenyon. Twentieth-century works include paintings by Victor Pasmore and Edward Burra. Recent additions feature twenty-first-century art. Visitors find a modern museum, art gallery and library combined under one roof. The building includes a dedicated Museum and Archives Centre. Modern artefacts such as iPods and electric vacuum cleaners are displayed alongside historic pieces. The museum’s surroundings are in the centre of Bury, close to other town amenities.
