Tinside Lido

Tinside Lido is an Art Deco seaside pool built in 1935 beside Plymouth Sound. It sits under the gaze of Plymouth Hoe and Smeaton’s Tower, a landmark lighthouse from the 18th century. The curved pool measures 55 metres across and is framed by concrete walls and cast-iron railings. Steps lead down from the promenade to the water, where three fountains once played. The changing rooms retain their original squared windows and staircases, echoing the style of the period. The lido closed in 1992 after years of decline, but a local campaign saved it. After a £3.4 million renovation it reopened in 2005 and gained Grade II listed status in 1998. A lift and hoist were added in 2009 to improve access for all visitors. Since 2022, Plymouth Active has run the site, planning further upgrades for conferences and marine education. Each summer solstice, crowds gather to mark the longest day in the semicircular pool. Visitors find a smooth concrete pool surrounded by projecting jetties and railings. The entrance is marked by curved cutwaters and wide steps leading into the water. The art deco changing rooms sit behind the pool, their metal windows and staircases intact. Beyond the railings, the sea stretches out towards Plymouth Sound and the distant breakwater. The view takes in the green slopes of Plymouth Hoe and the stone tower of Smeaton’s lighthouse.
