Church of St Mary Steps
The Church of St Mary Steps stands near the old west gate of Exeter, a Grade I listed building first built around 1150 and largely rebuilt in the 15th century. Its tower rises above a quiet street corner, marking the spot where the city’s medieval defences once stood. In the 19th century the architect Edward Ashworth restored the church, giving it the form visitors see today. Beside the church, The House That Moved was brought to this spot in 1961 after being lifted whole from its original site. The building now belongs to a benefice that also covers Heavitree’s churches, linking it to a wider parish network. The church’s long history is recognised in its Grade I listing, reflecting its importance in Exeter’s past. The 15th-century rebuild left a tower and nave that still dominate the skyline locally. Ashworth’s late Victorian restoration repaired damage and preserved medieval features for later generations. The House That Moved adds an unusual story, showing how the city adapted to modern needs without losing its heritage. Together they form a small but significant corner of Exeter’s history. Inside, the church offers a peaceful interior with medieval arches and Victorian woodwork. The nave leads to a chancel framed by tall windows, while the tower outside shelters a quiet courtyard. The House That Moved sits directly opposite, its timber frame contrasting with the church’s stonework. The surrounding streets hold older houses and shops, giving a sense of the area’s continuous life. From the tower’s base, the old west gate’s former position can still be imagined.
