The Catholic parish church of St Ägidius stands in the middle of the market square in Schenkenfelden, a small town in Upper Austria. The square itself measures exactly one hundred by one hundred metres. The church is dedicated to Saint Giles and belongs to the Freistadt deanery in the Diocese of Linz. It has been under official protection since the 16th century.

Built in 1525, the church combines late Gothic style with traces of its earlier Romanesque origins. A serious fire in 1951 destroyed much of the interior and the original baroque spire, which was replaced by the present pointed roof. In 1967–68 the building was remodelled and a new side chapel was added by the local artist Anton Zemann.

Inside, the church now centres on a modern granite altar set against its late Gothic vaulting. The bronze main door dates from 1997, while the bronze Stations of the Cross and several statues were created by Peter Dimmel in the 1980s. The tall slender spire rises to forty-eight metres and dominates the square from every approach.
