Stille-Nacht-Friedensweg

The Stille-Nacht-Friedensweg is a twelve-kilometre circular walk in the Salzburg countryside north of the city. It begins and ends at Oberndorf’s Stille-Nacht-Platz and winds through the towns of Oberndorf, Laufen on the Bavarian border, Göming and Lamprechtshausen. The route passes both old chapels and new artworks placed along the way.
The walk commemorates the 1818 first performance of Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht in Oberndorf. Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr created the carol in the region, and their shared route between homes is partly followed by today’s trail. The newer Friedensweg adds twelve wooden steles, each topped by a glass mosaic and bearing a peace-related quotation.
Walkers pass churches, wayside shrines and four contemporary artworks by local artists. The path climbs gentle hills and dips into hamlets such as Loipferding and Buchach. At each stele a QR code links to further reflections on peace. The whole route invites quiet thought while showing how a simple Christmas song still shapes this landscape.
