Großer Bettelwurf

The Grosser Bettelwurf stands 2 726 metres above sea level as the highest summit in the Gleirsch-Halltal chain of the Karwendel range in Tirol. It rises two thousand metres above the Inn valley and drops a sheer north face of twelve hundred metres into the Vomper Loch. The mountain is built from grey-white Wettersteinkalk laid down in the Middle Triassic period. The first recorded climber was Ludwig Barth zu Barthenau, a schoolboy guided up in about 1855. In September 1867 Julius Pock and Carl Wechner reached the top on their second attempt. Carl Gsaller pioneered the harder route on the Kleine Bettelwurf in June 1878 and then completed the ridge traverse to the Grosser Bettelwurf. A straightforward via ferrata from the Bettelwurfhütte at 2 077 metres leads to the summit. The Kleine Bettelwurf offers a moderate climb, and from its top a further moderate via ferrata connects to the higher peak. The view from the top stretches across the Karwendel and down to the Inn valley.
