Peutenburger Felsen

The Peutenburger Felsen is a striking rock formation beside the Erlauf river in Lower Austria. It stands on both banks where the river narrows, creating a natural barrier that once blocked travel. For centuries the sheer cliffs made the spot impassable for carts and travellers. In 1544 engineers blasted away the northern flank to open the Dreimärktestraße. The remaining rock was declared a protected natural monument in 1927. The site is worth a visit for its dramatic scenery and its place in local history. The blasted face still shows the scars of the 16th-century explosion. The protected status recognises the geological and scenic value of the formation. Walkers can reach the top via a steep path cut into the rock. From the summit there are wide views over the Erlauf valley and surrounding woods. Visitors find a quiet riverside spot framed by high stone walls. The river rushes past the base of the cliffs, its water clear and fast-flowing. A small footbridge links the two banks just below the formation. The area is popular with photographers and geology students. The rocks display layers of sandstone and conglomerate laid down millions of years ago.
