Bildungszentrum St. Benedikt Seitenstetten
The Bildungszentrum St. Benedikt stands in Seitenstetten, a village in Lower Austria’s Mostviertel region. The main building, completed in 1927 as the Adolphinum, served as an elite boarding school for noble boys. Its two-storey structure under a mansard roof shows a clear neobaroque style, with a niche oriel and dormer windows. The Diocese of St Pölten bought the house from Prince Auersperg in 1955 and turned it into the Marianum seminary. In 1973 the diocese became outright owner, and four years later an extensive new wing designed by architect Paul Pfaffenbichler was added. The 1977–79 extension includes a square chapel with an open timber roof and a surrounding gallery used for exhibitions. Inside, painter Rudolf Kolbitsch created an abstract stained-glass frieze, tabernacle, Stations of the Cross and an etched bronze door leaf. An organ was installed and the whole complex renamed Bildungshaus St Benedikt in 1994. After the diocesan seminaries in Melk and Seitenstetten closed in 2006, the old building joined the centre. Since 2015 the annual Forum Seitenstetten, a meeting on alternative finance and economics, has been held here. Visitors walk through the neobaroque entrance into a two-storey hall with high windows and original iron grilles. The 1979 chapel sits at the heart of the extension, its open roof and gallery lit by natural light. Exhibitions regularly occupy the gallery while concerts fill the space beneath the organ loft. The surrounding garden, planted with mature limes and lindens, offers quiet benches and views across the village rooftops. Inside, rooms retain the scale and materials of the 1920s while the newer wing provides modern seminar spaces.
