Dock Museum

The Dock Museum stands beside the Walney Channel in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Built partly inside a former dry dock opened in 1872, its brick walls once housed shipbuilding and steelworks that shaped the town. The museum traces Barrow’s growth from a small settlement to an industrial centre, with exhibits on the world’s largest steelworks, the Furness Railway and wartime bombing raids. Visitors can see models of ships and submarines built locally, along with the Vickers Photographic Archive of 10,000 glass plate negatives. Temporary exhibitions and a film show on the bottom floor add to the displays, while the Furness Hoard of Viking artefacts is held here after its 2011 discovery. The museum’s collection ranges beyond maritime history to include prehistory, natural history, domestic furnishings and toys. Four locally built boats are preserved on site, from a late 19th-century yacht to a 1914 Morecambe Bay prawner named Nance. The largest vessel, the Watson-class lifeboat Herbert Leigh, sits outside near North Road. A modern coffee shop, gift shop and adventure playground sit alongside accessible toilets and a hireable studio. The Channelside Walk leads from the museum up to old slag banks, offering views of Barrow, Walney Island, the Lake District and the Isle of Man when skies are clear. The building itself is a landmark, visible from the A590 and Hindpool Road intersection. Its car park was replaced by a hotel and restaurant in 2014, with parking now to the south beside the play area. A 25-year lease to BAE Systems brought changes, as part of the former studio and lower floor now house the company’s HR department. Despite some concerns from regular visitors, workshops, events and tours continue in a reduced form. The museum remains fully accessible and under public ownership, welcoming around 120,000 visitors in its busiest year.
