Herd Groyne Light

Herd Groyne Light stands at the mouth of the River Tyne where it meets the North Sea, marking the southern approach to South Shields. The low, white-painted tower with its lantern and gallery sits on a stone base at the end of the South Pier, a long breakwater built to keep the channel clear. The pier itself stretches out into the water, offering a straight walk of nearly a kilometre over the waves. On either side, the river currents meet the North Sea, creating shifting patterns of foam and colour. From the shore, the lighthouse appears small but purposeful, a guide for ships entering the busy Tyne. The light has guided vessels since the 19th century, when trade and industry along the Tyne were expanding rapidly. It was built to work alongside the pier lights and the high tower on the North Pier, forming a system that made navigation safer day and night. The South Pier was extended in the 1850s by the Tyne Improvement Commission, and the lighthouse was added to complete the line of markers. Its fixed white light still shines steadily, a familiar sight to sailors and local people alike. Visitors can walk the full length of the South Pier to reach the lighthouse, feeling the wind strengthen as they go. The pier is wide and paved, with railings on both sides for safety. At the far end, the lighthouse stands close to the water, its lantern visible from the beach below. The view back towards South Shields shows the long curve of the coastline, the river mouth, and the distant hills. On clear days, the sweep of the North Sea stretches to the horizon, while the town’s skyline rises behind. The sound of waves against the stones and the cry of seabirds fill the air, marking the edge of land and water.
