Stadttheater Memmingen

The Stadttheater Memmingen stands in the southern old town between Weinmarkt and Schrannenplatz. It occupies a former Augustinian convent building first mentioned in 1258. The site was once the Convent of St Elisabeth, a Franciscan house caring for the sick and poor. The theatre has been a stage since 1802, when the Dramatic-Lovers Society bought the empty convent. Major changes came in 1877–78 when an iron roof frame lifted the auditorium ceiling and added slate tiles. In 1904–05 the west façade was rebuilt in neo-Baroque style to create today’s old foyer. A 2010 south extension linked a glass-roofed stage lock, workshops, a café and a studio stage on the second floor. Visitors enter through the former cloister church now used as the theatre foyer. Frescoes by Hans Strigel the Younger line the cloister’s ribbed vaults, completed in 1475. The studio stage and rehearsal rooms sit above, while the administration occupies the top floor. All levels, including the underground car park, are wheelchair accessible.
