St Cross Church

St Cross Church stands on St Cross Road in north-east Oxford, just south of Holywell Manor and close to Holywell Cemetery. Once a small chapel dependent on St Peter-in-the-East, it dates back at least to the 11th century when the chancel arch was built. The nave followed around 1160 and the tower was added in the 13th century, with later changes in the 15th and 19th centuries. Architect George Edmund Street designed the north aisle’s west window in 1855, while the east window was made by Hardman & Co in 1874. The church became a Grade I listed building and was closed for worship in 2008. The church now houses Balliol College’s Historic Collections Centre, opened in 2011 after a £3.3 million conversion. The Shirley Foundation contributed £1 million to fund the project, which preserved the chancel for occasional services while creating modern research facilities. The centre holds Balliol’s administrative records, medieval manuscripts including one from about 1170, early printed books and personal papers of former Masters and Fellows. Memorials remain in place and the bells stay in the tower, though they are no longer rung. Notable figures buried nearby include composer Sir John Stainer and clockmaker John Knibb. Visitors find a quiet church with medieval fabric alongside modern research spaces. The north aisle contains Street’s relocated west window, while the south aisle forms part of the repository. The chancel retains its original fittings for occasional services, and the tower holds the unringable bells. Outside, Holywell Cemetery contains graves of important Oxford figures, including two former Masters of Balliol College. The building remains consecrated, blending centuries of history with contemporary academic use.
